Backstory

MawsonKerr was formed in 2010 by Will Mawson and Dan Kerr with an ambition to make a difference. After meeting while studying architecture at Newcastle University Will and Dan went on to work together on a number of high-profile regional projects. During this time they realised there was shared architectural, environmental and a social values and ventured into forming an architects studio.

MawsonKerr was set up in the depths of a bitter winter and the equally harsh credit crunch recession in 2010. While this period meant business opportunities were more challenging it fostered a can-do attitude; a mixture of positive outlook, dry sense of humour and hard endeavour proving a cocktail for success with a steadfast resolve to make high quality contextually responsive architecture.

The first commission came in the renovation of Friar House, an apartment hotel in the heart of Newcastle. This sensitive regeneration of a listed building, this project went on to pick up a several regional RIBA Awards that would be the springboard into more significant projects as RIBA Northeast Emerging Practice of the year.

Becoming accustomed to a working on complex projects, commissions such as the Bigg Market Regeneration and Sunbeams Music Centre has created a strong portfolio giving potential clients confidence in the then emerging practice as a safe pair of hands on sensitive design led projects.

Studio

The practice has a proven track record of environmentally sensitive contextually driven designs; our portfolio of completed buildings have been recognised nationally and on the international stage with several peer judged awards including RIBA, RICS and Civic Trust recognition.

Tenacity, attention to detail, creators of fine buildings - these aren’t our words but comments by our clients. Our projects wouldn’t exist without clients and we work hard to ensure their aspirations are realised. We enjoy close collaboration with everyone involved in the design and construction process from the clients through to material manufacturers, everyone bringing ideas which we coalesce to create and deliver bespoke buildings that have lasting quality.

As a practice we place strong emphasis on sustainability in every facet, through low energy buildings, construction techniques and renewable energy. Our team assess the merits of every project to develop potential opportunities with you. More on this in our process.

Alongside sustainability we believe context is key to the longevity of architectural design. Whether this be an innovative contemporary approach or working with sensitive existing structures. Contextual design has always been core to our solution driven architectural proposals, we’ve worked in a host of sensitive locations, urban historically important environs, national parks, costal nature reserves; we enjoy the challenge of finding the right architectural design to suit the brief.

We are involved in the construction process, we pride ourselves in our knowledge of construction in particular sustainable construction techniques. To create our bespoke design we have to fully understand the layers of detail and the communication techniques required ensuring designs are understood by the full team. It is important to us your project can be built, we work hard to make the buildings fit the budget.

In an ever-changing world we look to stay abreast of technology and employ the latest BIM software, this is alongside a host of other software programmes as required to be at the forefront of architectural design.

Geographically we have worked extensively throughout the North of England within Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria, and Yorkshire. We also have projects in Scotland, London and Mainland Europe. We enjoy working locally but are also happy to travel, give us a call we’d love to talk through your project.

As a practice we give time to various other relevant endeavours. We are supporters of the region and national RIBA, we give time to students and school children as part of the RIBA Mentoring and Architect Ambassador programmes. MawsonKerr are one of nine projects selected nationally as the RIBA’s Practice Role Models for the way in which the practice is run. We are closely affiliated with the local universities in Newcastle with tutoring and lecturing at various stages. We also support a number of local and regional charities and social endeavours.

Having completed the first decade the practice has grown in numbers and experience and now enters a new era as an employee owned business under Dan & Will’s guidance. We still hold the core values with which the practice was founded on as critical to the future success. The office has grown organically over time, with this we work at a variety of scales from single bespoke homes up to larger hotel and masterplan type projects. We give each project the same level of care and attention with a rigorous quality management regime third party checked as our ISO 9001 accreditation.

Office

The building where our magic happens is another piece of the backstory in finding opportunities and taking them.

In 2015 we were able to create a workspace for ourselves in a derelict listed structure in Newcastle city centre. The Georgian building is the former home of an eminent architect William Newton who lived and worked around 1798 in Charlotte Square. Now owned by the local council, who had struggled to find tenants due to then condition of the space.

This became a development project of our own, investing and project managing the works to bring this into a contemporary office space in a sensitive building fabric. The office is itself an evolutionary work in progress and exhibits some of our preaching in reuse, passive response and exploring materials.
