On site

2025 off to a good start with a new stand alone eco house commencing on site in Northumberland.

Swallowship is a paragraph 80 house meaning it meets the stringent exceptional design requirements set out in planning terms in order to gain approval within an isolated setting. The single storey proposal will be a low carbon construction with a mass insulated timber frame, clad with more timber. On the site of an old timber work shed, which we reference internally with the timber exposed structure.

Drawing 2024 to a close.

Wishing a Merry Christmas to everyone we have worked with this year. 2024 has been a tough in many respects but we have managed to complete several really important projects with more due in the new year.
We work hard to deliver the vision created and our recent architectural commissions have pushed the boundaries. To achieve this we are eternally grateful to the clients and clever people we work with, alongside the amazing material fabricators and all involved in the process.

Hoping everyone gets some well earned rest, looking forward to 2025 and what the future holds.

The office will be closed from 24th December to 2nd January.

Missing this sunshine right now, Whitburn Costal Conservation Centre looking stunning in the early morning light.

Sits proudly next to its stunning neighbour Souter Lighthouse created for @nationaltrust and @tynetotees .

The building has a simple palette of @we_are_prettyplastic shingles around every elevation painstakingly jointed at each return. The structure is the finish with a lovely warmth @constructional_timber CLT panels bring.

Delighted to announce @englishheritage project at Grimes Graves won the Retail and Leisure Project of the Year category at this year’s Structural Timber Awards.

A couple of our technical drawings forming a triptych of images, with an exploded axonometric drawing giving more understanding of the structure and the section indicates the delicate challenge the building had to overcome straddling an opening to the Neolithic mine. Whitburn Costal Conservation Centre

Delighted the educational pavillion we designed for @nationaltrust and @tynetotees has made the shortlist for the structural timber awards! Working closely with @jcconsultingltd and @skellyandcouch in getting everything to work as it should.

Up against some stiff competition, including another of our buildings (flex apology) in the Retail and Leisure Project of the Year category.

Stunning views out to sea and of the picturesque Souter Lighthouse are captured with CLT structural panels forming the internal finish at the exposed coastal site.

HICSA WIP

A couple of images showing progress on site of the Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (known as HICSA) we have designed and now delivering with Brims Construction for Sunderland College, Sunderland City Council and MOBIE.

The project, part adaptive reuse, part sustainable new build will be a key part in the future of construction. Both the older engine shed (first image) and new build (second image) have full height volumes which are starting to look really impressive in terms of scale and form.

This new build project, designed by @mawsonkerr is a fantastic showcase of a PassivHaus certified self build project. We supplied and installed @internorm_uk triple glazing throughout. The big glass frames maximise the stunning outlook whilst achieving incredible thermal efficiency year round.

🖤 Our Bigg Market 🤍

It’s been tough to read the news regionally and nationally, and particularly yesterday where the Bigg Market was deemed appropriate place for the far right protests in Newcastle. Businesses we have helped were forced to close and the public space barricaded for small minded outpourings.

There’s a certain irony given we designed the space to have a European feel and cited many examples from around the world when creating the new public realm makeover to be more open and accessible.

Thankfully the gathering was small, and the counter protest showed the strength of feeling in the region. United against hatred.

Thanks to the police, NE1, the council and everyone who responded to the ongoing threats. And the businesses for their patience

Our own site photos from a historic day at Grimes Graves where the interpretation building was completed and opened to the public.
A truly historic and popular site of a Neolithic flint mine, the building had some particular challenges straddling over an open mine.
The pavilion has information on the timeline of key dates etched into the timber cladding around which a walkway provides much needed accessibility into the building.

Zero Carbon

We work with a number of clients at differing scales to explore opportunities for zero carbon development, particularly in housing. Construction is a major contributor to global carbon useable and buildings in general contribute to around half the carbon at any time. This is something we are committed to improving on such as on the scheme shown here for a later living village in Northumberland.
The scheme had a strong contextual connection and playful geometry connecting all the homes.

Swallowship is a paragraph 80 house (now updated to paragraph 84 🤓) in planning speak means in order to gain planning approval it had to achieve an exceptional design standard. An additional hurdle we had to overcome was that the house is within the Hexham Green Belt.

The design is sensitive to its surroundings by being single storey, lying low within the existing tree line. By embedding itself physically within the landscape a subtle response has been created blending in with the local vernacular whilst encouraging direct access to nature from anywhere within the dwelling.

Our design breaks the home into three distinctive vaulted volumes each housing a different function. Swallowship has a living wing, a bedroom wing and in the centre a wing which houses the services and private spaces.

Focus on HICSA

A key part in the design of Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy is the inclusion of a historical building on the Sheepfolds site at Sunderland. The existing engine room is where early trains where designed and made and now is repurposed into the entrance and arrival part of the Skills Academy.

Images here show the approach to the building and what you will find upon entry. Inside there is space for presentation and organisation with the important new build teaching spaces linking into this. The large volume will make an impressive first impression to inspire future generations of innovators.

Showcasing HICSA - Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy

Situated next to the Stadium of Light in Sunderland and utilising a disused engine shed HICSA is a ground-breaking facility that will educate, train and upskill local people to create innovative factory-built new homes.
The building is a partnership between Sunderland City Council, Education Partnership North East (EPNE) and @mrgeorgeclarke the Ministry of Building Innovation and Education (MOBIE). It includes a purposed built new build facility connected to the Existing engine shed.
All about practical learning, various double and triple height spaces have been created allowing other learning spaces opportunity to view construction prototypes being tested.

‘Sunderland people are known internationally for their ability to make things – from ships in bygone years to cars today. We now have an opportunity to be a global leader when it comes to modern methods of construction (MMC), if we put in place the right infrastructure to deliver more highly-skilled people. The Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy will create opportunities for the people of Sunderland, and for the city itself. To carve out a new industry and to build homes that will allow it to grow its reputation as a place to live, work and play.’

Sunbeams Appreciation post

An architectural gift that keeps giving. At a lovely evening organised by @naa_est1858 Sunbeams Music Centre picked up an award for the Community building category. The awards recognise building performance and design several years after completion, not when shiny and new.
It was a real privilege of a project to work on, so much trust placed in our architectural hands. The positivity from all involved has been life changing for us as a company and embodies a lot of what drives us as an architect studio.

The evening included an open debate about urban issues focussed on Newcastle but applicable to most northern urban areas. There was so much positive energy, compared by the tour de force @timatxsite

Despite the current marginalisation, architects do have an important role as agents of change. Power influences are cyclical and shouldn’t deter from keeping a strong collective voice to help make change happen. ✊
