The Green Room We recently completed a new cultur

The Green Room

We recently completed a new cultural space within the @newcastletheatreroyal working in close collaboration with them alongside designers @design_north_interiors and @bobo1325 .

An adaptation of an existing bar / restaurant annexed from the theatre this space has been reconnected and through various workshops with staff we have created a new feel to compliment the historic Frank Matcham interior of the Grade 1 listed theatre. Images here capture the essence of the material palette and in use at a great opening ceremony.

Credit to @meldrumgroup completing @greenroomnewcastle construction in a complex live theatre environment.

Vaux Housing - Home of 2030
Glimpse into the courtyard created between two blocks of housing within the Riverside Sunderland masterplan

This block is a development of the Home of 2030 competition winning scheme that we were joint winners as part of @iglooregeneration team alongside @openstudioarchitects.
The @mhclg competition asked for answers to building sustainable community housing at scale, something a lot of us in the industry are grappling with.

We are working on 34 of the homes being created, part of the wider masterplan drawn up by @faulknerbrowns and @proctormatthews.

After a lengthy pause in the wake of Tolent Construction’s sad demise… Vaux is back!

We’re on site, this month. Feels like you can’t say it too loud in case it doesn’t happen. But, shouting it for now, and very excited to see this area of the city transform.

We are working on 34 of the homes being created, part of the wider masterplan drawn up by @faulknerbrowns and @proctormatthews.

Included in this phase is the development of Home of 2030, the @mhclg government competition winning scheme that we were joint winners as part of @iglooregeneration team alongside @openstudioarchitects.

A lot of patience has been needed by everyone included to get this to such an important point.

Glasshouse with the Walled Garden at The Auckland Project.

Some serious geometry for Friday. The project brought back the productive garden under the masterful watch of gardener Pip Morrison. Recently mentioned by @telegraph in top 40 UK places to visit this summer.

The glasshouse form takes inspiration from Joseph Paxton’s 19th Century ridge and furrow glasshouse design which sits well among some esteemed company. The second image shows the relationship with @niallmclaughlinarchitects Faith Museum.

Adding Calm on the inside

Within Cumbrian Byre the existing barn building has been transformed into a double height living space subtlety split into 3 areas for living, dining and cooking.

A picture window installed in the southern gable surrounded by historical ventilation slots now glazed.

We worked closely with the client to develop the interiors with a calming palette of colours and natural materials. Existing trusses carefully restored by the contractor. Existing contours of the stone barn are reflected internally using breathable diathonite insulation

We’ve recently completed some significant buildings as a practice. Over the next couple of weeks we are going to show off the fruits of our labour.

One category we feel accomplished in is creating really good homes, and this one is a corker.

Aptly named Byre House, it is part existing agricultural byre, and nestled up to this a modern metal clad extension with cantilevered gable.

We had a stunning office trip to see the house in Mediterranean weather (more of that please) and were treated to a feast courtesy of Rosie and Ben.

The house has been a real labour of love between the clients, builder and ourselves with many other people playing their part. Beautifully captured by @ojsturdy

We worked with the client to bring a number of low carbon aspects to the build with timber frame and diathonite insulation to the existing barn. Stunning interiors driven by the client create a relaxed atmosphere with moments of cutting edge technology carefully weaved in.

Sunshine on Whitburn Coastal Conservation Centre

Celebrating a fantastic evening at @riba.northeast awards last night where this modest centre picked up a regional building design award. The building does important work in particular with coastal bird life and education within the community. Fabric and materials chosen specifically to explore and embody coastal sustainability.

Huge congratulations to all involved, not least the courageous @nationaltrust and @tynetotees for taking on a project riddled with jeopardy.
This was a long collaboration internally and externally with important design input from previous MawsonKerr members Chris Brown and Ally Lowthorp.

We gave over our @thecoachhouse_mawsonkerr building to the @thelateshows and were blown away by the intervention @imogen_cloet devised commissioned by @creativecentralncl

Named - Somethings Growning in the Coachhouse, this was a part research, part artwork and beautifully curated working with @newcastleuni into the structural potential of mycelium and was literally grown over the course of several weeks.

So pleased to see how this has been received and to be a small part in facilitating this. We are always looking to innovate in our buildings and see the future of natural materials as the logical answer to many of our current conundrums.

Cracking image by @benhinesphoto of our recently completed pop up space within the curtilage of Newcastles Theatre Royal. Located on the corner of Grey Street we referenced Georgian patterns and stripped back hygge feel to create a calming interior.

A collaboration with Design North and working closely with Theatre Royal. From start to finish the project was counted in weeks not months. Works on site from pre start to hand over - 5 Weeks

Massing Model

Architects love a good model, and it turns out the public appreciate them too. Utilising the format to explain a proposed housing scheme on a complex sloping site served to demonstrate how the building would interact with all its surroundings and levels.

We use all techniques, orthographic drawings, computer CGI’s, hand drawings, text. Whatever the right medium is to get across the design especially in sensitive surroundings, which this is.

It’s a great learning tool too, making each contour you really get to understand the site in detail.

2025 off to a good start with a new stand alone eco house commencing on site in Northumberland.

Swallowship is a paragraph 80 house meaning it meets the stringent exceptional design requirements set out in planning terms in order to gain approval within an isolated setting. The single storey proposal will be a low carbon construction with a mass insulated timber frame, clad with more timber. On the site of an old timber work shed, which we reference internally with the timber exposed structure.

Wishing a Merry Christmas to everyone we have worked with this year. 2024 has been a tough in many respects but we have managed to complete several really important projects with more due in the new year.
We work hard to deliver the vision created and our recent architectural commissions have pushed the boundaries. To achieve this we are eternally grateful to the clients and clever people we work with, alongside the amazing material fabricators and all involved in the process.

Hoping everyone gets some well earned rest, looking forward to 2025 and what the future holds.

The office will be closed from 24th December to 2nd January.
